Genly Ai is on the planet called Gethen, which he called Winter. In this society everyone is of a homogeneous gender, until time of kemmer. He has a hard time dealing with the fact that they are only a gender when it comes time for kemmering then after they switch back to their neutral state. Genly comes from a planet where their gender is chosen at birth. On Winter he refers to everyone as a he because its easier for him. When Gethenians become pregnant, they can be man or female which Genly finds funny because he hears that the king's son is pregnant because where he comes from, only women can become pregnant. Other gethenians find it funny but for other reasons. He can't fully grasp their culture and way of life because of gender and the roles Gethenians play. He is labeled a pervert for being one gender all the time and always in kemmer, which causes the natives to not support him and his people. Its also very cold on that planet. It is how it got the name Winter because of the harsh climate. He feels isolated and alone because it is so cold so he keeps to himself and layers up to get warm. When its summer you'd feel more free because your wearing less clothes to cool off. We can relate with him because we feel with him that we aren't that far apart from Genly Ai.
