Fire Science: A Prediction in the Long Term Effects

As I continue my schooling career I will be furthering my education at Santa Ana community college. I have looked into this college because they have a great program for becoming a firefighter. I have had many doubts coming into this field of study due to the fact that its very hard to find a job. Finding a job is like finding a needle in a hay stack. Many people have gotten hired through an academy, through knowing people or just by winning the lottery basically. Being a firefighter has its benefits for example,  health insurance, vacation pay, and competitive pension plan. I am a very competitive person so I think I will do fine in being able to find a job and to get hired. All of the benefits are great, but not being able to find a job right away after I graduate is going to be hassle and when I apply for any Fire departments its pretty much a waiting game. This got me thinking, Is majoring in fire science really worth it?

  1. A college degree will help. I believe you need to do everything you can do to set yourself apart from everyone else. I would recommend going to college and test at the same time. On a side note, do some research on the university or college you choose. I know there are a lot of departments that will not recognize a degree from random college because their fire science program is not identified or well known. Just something to think about. I know a couple of guys that spent a lot of money on a degree from a random college and their department would not accept it.

  2. I believe a college degree will help a lot. I know someone else who has asked this same question and the woman who answered used being a police man as an example. If you go to college and get a degree in something that is very useful to what you are trying to do, that may put you into a spot higher than the rest. You will still get to do what you want to do but you might get a higher pay say if you understand finance more than others. You are a step ahead of everyone else because not only can you fight fires, you can do other things.

  3. Having that college degree will definitely help. In the sense that it'll grant you higher pay because of your degree. It's like the statistics that say you earn more if you have a degree rather than just having a high school diploma.
