Going Against the Grain

Throughout my high school career I have dreaded the time of the year where college applications were the number one priority because I was very indecisive of where I wanted to go, what I wanted to be and what I wanted to major in. I  used to see previous seniors stressing about college applications and I knew that was going to be me  and now it is.  I witnessed many different routes that worked and didn’t work for some individuals. I used to want to go to a four-year  University but once I really understood how much debt a person can  get themselves into just from college debt I figured  Community college was the better way because I don’t even know what I want to major in. Since I am very indecisive is going to community college better than going to a four-year university?  Is it easier to get sidetracked if going to a community college rather than a four year university?  I’m not ashamed of wanting to go to community college because I can always transfer if I even have the funds.  However, I still want to apply to Cal states and UC’s because I want to see what type of options I can have for myself. Am I wasting my time doing college applications when I plan on going to community college, eventhough I don’t mind a variety of paths I can choose from?

  1. I agree with you and believe that going to a community college will surly save money in your pocket than going to a four-year university. Unsure of what major you want to help you achieve your life long career. Yet I think you can get sidetrack at anytime not just because you are going to a community college or a four-year university. What I do known is once we leave high school we will adventure out and experience new things that will collect our attention and may side track us whether we attend a community college or a four-year university either one is suppose to give us different experiences that will sidetrack us to finding what we really love doing and what we can see ourselves doing in the long run. Another item you pointed out was if you are wasting your time doing college applications when planning on going to a community college, you aren't wasting your time I believe. Say if you change your mind and end up not wanting to attend a community college but instead a Cal state or UC because they may have a major that you would like to take that will help you in one of the variety career paths you have thought of. Currently we have to take chances and see where they get us so applying to both community colleges, Cal states, and UC's is a genius idea in my opinion.

  2. Although four-year schools get all the hype, many high school graduates head right to a two-year institution. Looking at the facts, it’s no surprise why. Cheaper and quicker, two-year schools offer students the chance to start their careers sooner and with less or no debt. You can also use a two-year school as a starting point to start earning your degree. although community college used to have a reputation for being less academically serious than four-year universities. therefore the decision is all yours but keep in mind they're pros and cons to everything.

  3. I understand exactly what you are going through. College application is such a hassle especially if you are unsure of what you want to do in life. I changed my decision on what I wanted to major in college so many times in the past couple of months and what I wanted my career to be.I'm still indecisive. I believe it's up to you, so many people who attend a 4 year university are so sure on what they want to major in, but soon realize that it's not what they are really interested in or committed to achieving and later changes it. I do understand that community college is more cost efficient and takes 2 years to complete compared to 4 years. But it all depends on the person, community college or a 4 year university. If you get sidetracked it will take longer for you to get your degree. No, I don't believe that you are wasting your time doing college applications. It's good to know that you have option in case you can your mind and find what you are truly passionate about. Whatever you choose I wish nothing but success!

  4. I understand what you are going through, and I am going through the same thing. I have heard that if you know exactly what you are going to major in, its best to go straight to a four year college, but if you are unsure, its best to go to a community college. Going to a community college will definitely save a lot of time and money, and once you figure out what you want to major in, you can transfer over to a Cal State or UC. I think that you should still do college applications, just so you have options with what to do in the future. Both pathways of community or four year have their pros and cons, but regardless of what path you choose to take I hope it brings you happiness and success. :) -Hannah Kearney

  6. I'm in the same place as you. I also don't know what to major in. I don't think you are wasting your time doing college applications. If, in the future you decided to go to a 4 year, then you know you actually have options because you applied to universities. Plus, community colleges are cheaper and will save you money and give you a head start on what you want to do. I hope everything works out well for you!

  7. Hi Maritza, I am in about the same predicament you are, as you have read in my blog post. I think it's great that you are thinking about the future and how you don't want to have to deal with debt. I don't think there is a problem with going to a community college because I feel like you are learning the same type of education depending on what you are majoring in but you are paying more money when going to a Cal State or UC. It makes sense to go to a community college if you are unsure on what you want to major in. In my opinion I feel like if you choose to go to a Cal State or UC and you know what you'd like to major in, your money will be actually worth being spent on. It's great that you applied to Cal States just in case you change your mind about going to a community college because you'll have backup options. Good luck!! -Juliet Rose Chacon

  8. Hey, there you should never be ashamed in choosing a community over a 4 year. Anyways I know for sure that I am going to a community college due to me wanting to save money and to be in less debt. Applying to 4 year colleges isn't bad because if you get accepted you are just opening more doors and hey you might want to change your mind on going to a 4 year. -tony Licea III
