Is the financial burden worth it to attend a 4 year university?

My plan is to attend a 4 year university. Preferably a cal state university. I plan on staying local because I don't wan't to be a financial burden to my parents, they've already sacrifice so much for me. Since they never finished college I know that they would want me to finish college and be successful in my preferred career. They'll would do what ever it takes to help me. Parts of me wants to go and explore, and attend an out of state and stay on campus.  Get the full college experience.  Finding myself and surround myself around new people.  But I know that the cost of tuition and room and board will be so much money.  I know that there are ways to pay for college such as scholarships and financial aid but it will still cost a lot.  I would attend a community college to save money but that's not what I really want to do.  I'm pretty set that I want a career in the health field  because I enjoy helping others, but I just don't know what kind of career in that field. There are so many to choose from! For the longest of time I wanted to be a Dentist, but now I don't think I'd be really committed in that competitive field. So now I'm indecisive in what I want to do or major in. Should I be selfish and go to the college that I want to attend or just go to the most affordable? I don't want to be in serious debt afterwards and spend years paying it off! But if it's worth it I will.

  1. Hi Kayla,
I believe the financial "burden" if you want to call it that, is worth it to some people, although it all depends on what you want to be/do exactly. If it is something that is able to be done without a college education, or that requires something small like an AA degree, than my personal opinion would be it is not entirely worth it. From a life experience standpoint, maybe it could still be worth it to you, but that is entirely up to you. If you are trying to be something more serious or highly skilled, like something in the medical field, or lawyer, than it is definitely worth it. The amount of information and learning done in college on degrees like I mentioned are so good, they are worth the money.

  2. I also agree with Steven I definitely think it is worth the "burden" if you go to college to pursue a career and not just a job. Going to college can afford a person a long term career which can potential pay the financial "burden" that comes with college. Also colleges provides a lot of opportunities both academically and socially.

  3. I agree with Steven and Tiara on this one, I believe that it is worth the burden to go to a 4 year college to get a career after and not just get a job. When you get through your years of college in the end ur gonna wanna be able to get a long term career in which you can support your family when you have one. You'd also want to go to a 4 year college because college can help you socially and academically. I know as of right now you're probably thinking "I don't wanna pay this and "I don't even wanna go anymore". But in the long run you will thank yourself for spending what you didn't wanna spend. As soon as you get that big fat check at the end of the month it will all be worth it.
