Online Anonymity

Online anonymity is something that I feel would not be a good asset to the online community.  It can have its positives, but overall it has more negatives.  Having the abliity to be anonymous online would protect the identity of the trolls who take advantage of the internet.  Trolls are people who hide behind a computer screen, satisfied with how they hurt people, because they can’t physically see how it affects their targets.  Online anonymity would just protest their identities, and would protect them from the consequences that they deserve.  This is also similar to net neutrality.  People who are in favor of net neutrality believe that it will prevent trolls from attacking the internet, when in reality, it will just ruin the internet for the people who really need it.  Students who use the internet for studying will now have to pay to "study."  The internet has grown to become such an advantage in our lives: we use google to look up information, we use social media to keep in contact with friends and family, and so much more.  Making us pay to use the internet is wrong, since we have grown so accustomed to having it right at our fingertips whenever we need it.

  1. Hello Hannah, I totally agree with you. Although online anonymity has some benefits, it has more negatives. As you said, people use an anonymous shield as a weapon to attack people do not realize the affect they have on others and never face the consequences of their words online. If they feel so strongly about something, they should feel comfortable putting their name on it and deal with the consequences. Also, I agree with your perspective on net neutrality. What sucks the most is that our government ignored the populations efforts to protest the repeal of net neutrality. Ending net neutrality is clearly not what the people want and its repeal will have ripple effect for the years to come.

  2. The being of online anonymously can bring wellness to many. Those who are shy and only want to use the internet as a source of express should be allowed that right. While those who are extremely cruel should be served with some sort of consequence.

  3. Although anonymity online can sheild trolls from consequences, the Internet has to fundamentally remain anonymous in order to function properly. Anonymity prtects people who are whistleblowing or speaking out against authority from their oppressors. It also keeps personal information out of the hands of trolls. If people's names were availabe on the Internet, people who are abusive online will be just as hard to punish because there is no government that can regulate the internet. Private companies such as Facebook or Twitter are within their right to regulate the content of their platforms, but it would be impractical and counterintuitive to remove all anonymity on the internet.
